RE: Just completed first trip in new 5th wheel

Glad to hear you had a great trip without any problems, it sure makes RV'ing much more enjoyable. We lived on the Island for years as well.....loved it there.

RE: TV Tire Pressure While Towing

Inflating your tires to sidewall maximum while towing will increase fuel mileage slightly, it will greatly improve handling while towing.
To a point, IMHO overinflating tires for the load on them (not over tire max) will wear out the center of the tread and not necessarily improve handling much if at all, especially in heavy rain where they tend to hydroplane.

RE: How many days from Banff to Fairbanks w/out Stops?

Driving at night be very aware of deer, moose, caribou and other animals on, or crossing the road. Also, some sections of the Alaska Hwy are very rough and under ongoing construction, so be ready for some slow going and construction delays, and, you will miss some of the more scenic areas if you drive a lot through the night.
Going to Fairbanks via Top of the World Hwy, is much, much longer than staying on the Alaska Hwy

RE: RVs for winter living

Not sure if these are made out east but the General Coach lines, Corsair Excella and Citation Supreme, are 4 season rv's.
They are solid units, but heavy. Our 26RKS has a dry weight of 8,900#. Overall length is 27' 5". This is their small unit.
General Coach is owned by Thor.
Their Polar Pak is guaranteed to -30c about -22f and warranted for full time use.

RE: Has rise in gas prices caused you to decrease your camping?

Hi, we planned our very soon upcoming cross Canada and N/E USA trip a year and a half ago. I figured that eating in fewer restaurants, if any (the fiver has a perfectly good kitchen!) and slowing to 55-60 MPH will make up the difference in fuel costs.

RE: Using 30 amp service on a 50 amp Fifth Wheel

Hi, my fiver is 50amp, and using one A/C on 30 amp is fine, even using the M/W at the same time, just make sure you have the 30amp male/50amp female adapter.

RE: Cracker Barrel Overnight

A lot of places that have long RV parking spots are taken up by single cars/trucks which are parked right in the middle, and the rest of the lot is almost empty....blind ignorance if you ask me, or just too lazy to walk another 50 feet, yet, do you ever notice the dirty looks or comments if we park our rigs in the main parking lot?
Just a thought.

RE: W.A.C. Bennett Dam

Hi, we did in 06 (the year of bad forest fires there) on the way to Alaska, a fascinating guided tour of the dam and generating plant though security is very evident.
The reason I mentioned forest fires is that DW is susceptible to smoke and once down the elevator at the dam, her breathing really improved, that's how well the air is conditioned and filtered down there.
We stayed at a nice campground in Hudson's Hope, Lynx Creek RV Park and Campground fairly close (15-20min) to the dam site. It had electricity and water, but I don't think sewer.

RE: Suggestions on stopover between Jasper and vancouver?

Hi, there are several ways to go from Jasper to Vancouver. Have you decided on a route? ie, Jasper - Lake Louise via the Icefields Parkway (known as one of the worlds most scenic drives and highly recommended) then W to Kamloops over the Rockies on Hwy 1, or 2 Jasper to Kamloops via Hwy's 16 and 5 to Kamloops....can be a boring drive once you turn South on Hwy 5
Once in Kamloops you can go to Vancouver 1 of 2 ways, 1 via Hwy 1 to Hope, longer but much more scenic, or 2 Kamloops to Hope via Hwy 5 known as the Coquihalla (Coke-a-Halla) which is a toll $10 for cars or any RV's)) freeway and much quicker, but, there's only one place, Merritt, about 50 min out of Kamloops, for services.
There are other much longer ways to go, but I'm presuming you want a more direct route.
You can PM me with your route if you like, and I'll suggest some places for you to stay. I live in Kamloops and know the area very well.

RE: how do you make phone calls in BC and Yukon?

...be more civil with the responses...
Then the original question should have been asked in a more civil manner, such as "With the advent of cell phones and decreasing payphones in the US, what are the availabilities of ..." and I would not have reacted the way I did. But when the questions is asked the way it was, will get this kind of reaction from most Canadains, or any other person from the country the question is being asked.
And please dont delete this relpy, as it will help others in the future when composing and posting questions. It is all in how you ask, not what you ask.
I just read your posts, I'm Canadian and frankly, your posts embarrass me.
I hope our U.S. neighbours don't think all Canadians have your attitude.
Oh, by the way, most of us are Canadian, not Canadains.

RE: Alaska at today's fuel price

Hi, I just checked gasbuddy and the price of diesel in BC ranges from $4.80 to a ridiculous $5.50 per U.S. gallon, Alaska ranges from $4.33 to $5.16.
Reg gas BC is $4.33 to $5.16 and Alaska is $3.69 to $4.98.
BC prices based on dollar parity at X per liter multiplied by 3.8 rounded out to the closest penny.
This is just for information at todays prices and not meant to upset anybody.
We had planned a cross Canada and New England trip for this year and are still going. I figured out that not eating in restaurants as much as we used to, and slowing down to 55-60 MPH will make up the extra fuel costs.

RE: how do you make phone calls in BC and Yukon?

Hi, have a look at "magicjack" a device you plug into a usb port on any computer, including high speed wifi, and a regular phone line plugs in on the other end. There is a lot of information on their site, magicjack.com and free LD in Canada and the USA. My BIL in Oregon uses it and says its a lot better than the other computer phone systems, and you can dial to a normal phone not connected to a computer, as per your mom. We just ordered ours so I can't give a first hand report on it yet.
You do get a ph# with it, and IIRC $40 the first year and $20 thereafter
Hope this helps

RE: FL to Maine to Alaska

Thanks for that info.
Today we got told not to take our Coach to Alaska because it would be damaged due to the bad roads in Canada and Alaska and rather park it in Vancouver and rent one. Now if we have to park it in Vancouver I would rather fly to Anchorage for the tour we booked there instead of renting a motorhome. Any suggestions?
Hi, we have gone to Alaska twice and Northern BC and the Yukon several times and didn't damage the truck or 5th wheel, or the TC many years ago.
IMHO the #1 rule for driving the Northern roads is.....slow down.
It's the frost heaves which do 95% of the damage to vehicles when they don't slow down and hit the frost heaves at speed.
Most if not all of the time, those heaves are marked by red/orange flags on the shoulder of the road.
I see too many people seeing the posted speed limit and going that fast or faster....that = damage.
Paving the roads up North is an ongoing process as the frost heaves and minor earthquakes damage different parts every year, so, for example what was good last year will probably be rough or being repaved this year
The other 5% of the damage, especially paint chips and windshields is done by other drivers going too fast oncoming, or passing you.
I'm no expert on RV'ing up North but I've done my share and I'm sure more experienced people will have more to say.
If you have a toad, get a front cover or your own rear axle will kick up some rocks and maybe damage it.
I hope this helps.....
Peter
ps, not all of the highways are paved and in fact some of the gravel ones or sections are actually smoother than the paved ones.
